However, the castle lost its strategic importance relatively early on. During the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle was besieged by French troops in 1689 and largely destroyed by being blown up. It has not been rebuilt since and is now one of the most famous ruins in the region. The surviving remains, including parts of the residential building (palas) and the impressive five-storey tower, give a good impression of the original complex. There is now a hotel-restaurant at the foot of the castle rock.
