The castle was probably built in 1152 by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to protect the imperial territory around Kaiserslautern and to secure the Staufer family estate.

Visitors are welcomed today by some impressive wall remains, including the remnants of the massive keep. The complex once consisted of two separate castles with two owners. The castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
Today, the "New Building" houses a school camp.
