Der Tschenghel auf Gebiet der Gemeinde Trin erstreckt sich nordöstlich bzw. östlich des Turniglabaches von Scursaneus bis östlich der Alp Lavadignas und liegt ausserhalb des Abrissgebietes des grossen Flimser Bergsturzes. Er ist von zahlreichen Felspartien aus Malmkalken und von felsigen Runsen durchzogen. Im oberen Teil gibt es ausgedehnte Schutthalden. Tschenghel heisst so viel wie "Rasenband in Felsen, Felsband".

Der Tschenghel ist zur Hauptsache von Legföhrengebüsch bewachsen. In weniger felsigen, etwas tiefgründigeren Partien wächst Fichtenwald in der hochmontanen und subalpinen Ausbildung. Im Legföhrengebüsch wie auch im "Erika-Fichtenwald" fällt die Erika mit ihren rosafarbigen Blüten besonders auf. An etwas weniger stark besonnten und feuchteren Expositionen gedeiht eine Ausbildung des Legföhrengebüschs mit der Bewimperten Alpenrose.

Die Legföhre (Liegende Bergföhre) wächst vor allem in Lawinenzügen. Sie hat sich durch ihre schmiegsamen Stämmchen dem Schneegleiten, den Schnee-rutschen und dem Überfahren durch Lawinen gut angepasst. Erst bei ausbleibenden derartigen Schneeeinwirkungen wächst die Bergföhre als aufrechte Form (Spirke, Aufrechte Bergföhre).

Die Legföhre, wie auch die Aufrechte Bergföhre, vermag sich an schuttigen Stellen, in Geröllhalden und auf sehr trockenen Standorten zu halten, wo sie nicht der Konkurrenz anderer Baumarten ausgesetzt ist. Auf wüchsigeren Standorten wird sie durch die Fichte und die Lärche verdrängt. Dort ist sie le-diglich ein Pionier nach flächiger Waldzerstörung durch Sturm, Rutschung, Ero-sion, Lawinenniedergang oder Waldbrand.

Im nordwestlichen Teil des Tschenghel, auf 1680-1940 m ü. M., kann die natür-liche Sukzession nach einem Waldbrand beobachtet werden.

Das Legföhrengebüsch im Tschenghel ist ein beliebter Aufenthaltsort von Hir-schen und Gemsen.
