At the heart of the Ballon des Vosges Regional Nature Park, the state forest of Gérardmer comprises a number of wooded areas surrounding and overlooking the town of the same name.

It extends over a base of crystalline rock that culminates at 1306 m altitude at Haut de Falimont, not far from the Hohneck, the second highest peak in the Vosges massif.

Fauna is abundant, with several emblematic protected species such as the Capercaillie, Lynx and Tengmalm's Owl. The flora is represented by a number of remarkable plants, including the Andromeda, the Yellow Gagea and several species of Drosera (a carnivorous plant).
