The Silent People and Niittykahvila Café, Suomussalmi Finland
On the side of the E-5 highway, some 30 kilometres from Suomussalmi towards Kuusamo, a startling army of strawheads – The Silent People- stops the travellers in their tracks. The peat heads created by dance artist Reijo Kela were first put up in 1988 on another field for a performance. The Silent People was put up in its current location in the autumn of 1994.
The peat-heads have their clothing attended to twice a year; their heads come straight from the field, their clothes from donations.
Niittykahvila Café's easy going atmosphere, the irresistible smell of fresh campfire coffee and pancakes and the play of the sun on your skin come together to invite you into their magical company. Pancakes with house marmelade or with vegetable filling or with reindeer-ham filling are great choise to fullfill your stomac's calling. Some delicious local snacks are also available. Afterwards, let's have a nap in the hay barn!
