Hill of Witches

Hill of Witches is a unique museum of wooden sculptures, where devils, witches and other folklore heroes reign, opening the natural-mystical spirit of this place to visitors. Most of the sculptures on Hill of Witches are arranged around the picturesque Spruce Valley. This valley is a natural forest amphitheater. In 1979 wood carvers and blacksmiths from all over Lithuania were invited to work on this project. During the first period, folk masters created 25 sculptures, and during three folk artists' camps in 1979-1981 71 more sculpture were created. This project was led by sculptor Steponas Šarapovas and architect Algimantas Nasvytis. In 1988 12 more sculptures were created. In 1999 sculptures, which have existed for decades, have begun to be restored. In 2002 some of the sculptures that could not withstand the humid climate were replaced with new ones. Today, the exposition of wooden sculptures on Hill of Witches in Juodkrante is one of the most visited tourist objects in Neringa.
