The steadfast willow

Willows (Salix spp.) usually grow near water and are so well rooted that they’re resistant to flooding. There are nearly endless varieties of willow. In South Tyrol alone there are 26 species that are often difficult to tell apart. What’s more, most of the willows naturally form hybrids, meaning that the varieties are virtually infinite. Growing near water also benefits the willows given their capacity for regeneration. Should a stem break under the force of flooding, a new sapling soon sprouts from the old stump. These saplings are practically indestructible, capable of surviving whatever is thrown at them. Willow branches are very robust and flexible and are therefore used as a binding material in orchards or for basket weaving.
