The Steppe peony (Paeonia tenufolia L)
can be admired in all its splendour in the Zau de Câmpie Reserve. The ideal time to visit is April-May, but the flowering of the peonies depends very much on the weather.
The reserve has two parts, with most visitors preferring to stay in the lower one. The top one is a bit of a climb.
The reserve is home to more than 350 species of plants, but the peony is predominant. The site was established and inaugurated in 1932 by the botanist Alexandru Borza, and later maintained by a local. Today, the curator of the reserve is also a local, and a keen photographer. Through him the peonies can be admired in all their splendour and at times when access is not allowed.
The „historic” areas in the reserve show peonies planted decades ago.
Although there is no control at the entrance, it would be advisable to în inside not to consume food. Care is also advised when walking through the bushes, especially as access is not restricted.
