In this rocky barren landscape, whipped by the sea, some plant species, which are fully adapted to salinity conditions, survive: the halophytes. They grow in the coastal zone and gradually mix with phrygana vegetation the further we move from the sea. In Trachilas, apart from halophytes of the genus Limonium, one can see the Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, a species used in folk medicine as an antibiotic, antidote and hypoglycemic. Recent chemical analyses have identified its relevant bioactive substances and point out that it may prove to be a plant beneficial for sustainable agriculture and the production of natural products. At the same time, it is a plant useful as a “green infrastructure”, since it is considered suitable for green roofs in coastal urban areas of the Mediterranean. Other species prevailing in the cape are the anthyllis (Anthyllis hermanniae), an important beekeeping plant, the thorny burnet (Sarcopoterium spinosum) and thyme.
