This area of Kythera is scattered with oak trees (Quercus ilex ), possibly remnants of primordial forests, which were degraded. It is an evergreen, perennial tree, which is found mainly in the central and eastern Mediterranean. It is resistant to drought and high temperature conditions and can exceed 20 meters high. Oak is considered a beekeeping plant, while its fruits were used as food for animals, the acorn cup as tanning and dyeing material for leather. Its wood is used for ship construction and other purposes (firewood, coal, tools, furniture etc.). Oaks, at this point, are intertwined with “liophyta”, maples (Acer sempervirens) and species of maquis vegetation.
