This area at the end of Kentrolagado, called Kampos, but also towards Apoklistra and Sgouritsi bay is full of junipers. Juniperus phoenicea (Juniperus phoenicea) is one of the few native forest tree species in Kythera and is found mainly on the southern and steep western shores of the island. The juniper wood is heavy, fragrant and highly resistant to rot and insects. Thus, they were used for the manufacture of furniture, tools and as rafters on roofs. The fruits, are also used as a seasoning in dishes in the oven. The juniper forests of Kythera have been irreparably affected by the successive fires of recent decades (2000, 2007 and 2017). Palm juniper forests are protected under EU Directive 92/43 on the protection and conservation of natural habitats.
