At first glance, the reason for the fire lily’s name becomes immediately apparent: The individual petals look like a blazing flame. Fire lilies thrive in open sunny spots, especially in dry meadows. They occur with very few exceptions throughout South Tyrol. But watch out, there are two different fire lilies! The widespread fire lily (Lilium bulbiferum subsp. bulbiferum) produces stem bulbils in the axils of its upper leaves, and new plants develop when these fall to the ground. This type of propagation is advantageous wherever the seeds cannot always fully ripen - so especially in higher and cooler locations. In the warmer climates, there is the less common Chaix lily (Lilium bulbiferum subsp. croceum), which doesn’t produce any stem bulbils. Which of the two related species do we have here?
