Der Begriff "Arboretum" ist abgeleitet von dem lateinischen Wort "arbor". Das heißt auf deutsch: "der Baum". Ein Arboretum ist ein "Baumgarten" oder "Baumpark". Nach der offiziellen Definition ist ein Arboretum eine "zu Studienzwecken angelegte Sammelpflanzung verschiedenartiger Bäume und Sträucher".
