St Paul's Cathedral is located in the centre of Münster on Domplatz.
The cathedral church of the diocese of Münster impresses with its impressive architecture. The foundation stone of the cathedral was laid in the 13th century. The astronomical clock, which dates back to the late Middle Ages, is particularly worth seeing. After the destruction caused by the Second World War, the cathedral was rebuilt until 1951. Further renovation work on St Paul's Cathedral was also completed in 2013.
St Paul's Cathedral in Münster is a Roman Catholic church under the patronage of the Apostle Paul. As the cathedral of the diocese of Münster, it is one of the most important churches in the city and is a landmark alongside the historic town hall. The cathedral stands on the Horsteberg hill in the city centre, bordered by the streets Spiekerhof, Roggenmarkt, Prinzipalmarkt and Rothenburg. The cathedral immunity encompasses the cathedral square and neighbouring buildings.
With two predecessor buildings, the Ludgerus Cathedral and a second cathedral, the current cathedral was built from 1225-1264. The westwork with identical towers dates from the 12th century and was integrated into the third cathedral. St Paul's Cathedral combines Romanesque in the westwork and Gothic in the basilica building.
The cathedral houses the tomb of Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen. Each cathedral building became the bishop's church of the diocese of Münster when it was consecrated and had additional functions such as collegiate church and parish church. After the demolition of St Jacob's Church in 1812, the cathedral once again became the parish church for a limited district.
