Roskilde Cathedral is Denmark's royal church with the tombs of 40 regents. It was the first Gothic cathedral in Scandinavia to be built of brick and is therefore a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
1,000 years of Danish history are gathered under the splendidly decorated, skyward-spiralling vaults and in dark crypts.
Initially only to honour different saints, the chapels of the cathedral were later converted into the final resting place of various Danish kings. A total of 40 Danish kings and queens were buried in the cathedral, including Harald Blauzahn, Margaret I and Frederick IX. Until the beginning of the 15th century, the church was the official burial place of the Danish royal families.
In addition to the mausoleums and tombs of the kings, there are other precious pieces of furniture. Among them is the gilded Antwerp reredos, which was made around 1550–1560 and depicts Christ's childhood and passion. Equally precious is an elaborately carved choir stall made in 1420. A very special piece of equipment is the so-called "King's Column". On it, the body sizes of various European rulers were recorded. For example, the Oldenburg King Christian I is recorded at 2.19 metres.
