Werra-Stauwehr für das Wasserkraftwerk Philippsthal

Seit Ende des 19. Jh. sollte die elektrische Energie für die Industriealisierung des Kalibergbaus und der Verarbeitung genutzt werden. Weil es noch keine öffentliche Stromversorgung gab, mussten die Werke ihren Strom selbst erzeugen. Die Kaliwerke Hattorf (Philippsthal) und Wintershall (Heringen) kauften dafür Wassermühlen an der Werra, rissen sie ab und bauten statt dessen (zu damaliger Zeit) hochmoderne Kraftwerksanlagen, die auch heute noch Strom für die Kaliindustrie und die umgliegenden Gemeinden produzieren.

Fast alle Wasserkraftanlagen (außer Harnrode) der Werra-Kraftwerkskette zwischen Tiefenort und Berka/Werra wurden anstelle ehemaliger Mühlen gebaut. Das bis 2004 zum Kaliwerk Hattorf gehörende Kraftwerks Philippsthal wurde 1908 an einer Engstelle der Werra errichtet, die hervorragend zur Nutzung der Wasserkraft geeignet war. Die ehemalige Mühle im Besitz des Klosters Kreuzberg stand wahrscheinlich schon seit Ende des 13. Jh. an dieser Stelle und ist für die topografische Anlage von Werraverlauf, Wehr, Mühlgaben und Mühleninsel ausschlaggebend. Das schräg im Fluss stehende Werrawehr staut das für die Mühle nötige Oberwasser und leitet es in den Mühlgraben ab. 1889 wurde der Mühlenbetrieb aufgegeben. Anfang des 20. Jh. erwarb das Kaliwerk Hattorf die Mühle und baute 1908 das Kraftwerk. Im Unterbau des Turbinenhauses laufen in zwei Kammern die beiden Francisturbinen, die die Generatoren darüber antreiben. In der Schaltwarte sind die originalen Schalttafeln mit vielen Mess- und Regelinstrumenten erhalten (aber außer Betrieb, durch moderne automatische Regeltechnik ersetzt).

1996-2005 kaufte die Firma AUS Eberlein & Co. GmbH die Kraftwerke und dazugehörigen Wehre. Das Wehr in Philippsthal wurde 2013 durch Fritz Eberlein aus Rothenburg ob der Tauber für 1,2 Millionen Euro sukzessive umgebaut, technisch aufgerüstet und ökologisch auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Am Wehr in Philippsthal wurden eine Fischtreppe, eine Aus- und Einstiegsstelle für Kanuwanderer sowie ein Horizontalrechen mit 15 Millimeter breiten Durchlässen installiert.
