Das Thüringer Meer, wie der Hohenwarte-Stausee genannt wird, zieht Wassersportler und Touristen mit vielfältigen Freizeitangeboten an. Mit seiner fjordähnlichen Landschaft gehört das Thüringer Meer zu den landschaftlich schönsten Stauseen Deutschlands.

Der Hohenwarte ist ein Stausee, der in den 1930er Jahren durch Anstauung der Saale mittels einer nahe der namensgebenden Thüringer Ortschaft Hohenwarte gelegenen Staumauer entstanden ist.Das Thüringer Meer sowie die Saale in Hohenwarte bieten beste Möglichkeiten für Angler und Fliegenfischer. In der "Angelhütte" Hohenwarte werden Angel-Berechtigungen und Angler-Bedarf angeboten. Die 642m lange Rohrbahn, die Ober- und Unterbecken des Pumpspeicher-Kraftwerkes verbindet, prägt das Ortsbild von Hohenwarte.

Auf fünf gut ausgeschilderten Rund-Wanderwegen (Bezeichnungen H1 - H5) mit Ruhebänken und schönen Aussichtspunkten - z.B. Klinkhardtshöhe, Hohenwarteblick und Saaleblick Günthersheil - finden die Besucher Erholung und Entspannung.
