In a beautiful spot of the ravine, in the district of Korianika, with the orchards, and the rich vegetation, the small stone dam, was reconstructed, along with a barrier. Using the stones of the area as the basic material, the microbarriers have preserved the traditional character of the structures and are fully harmonized with the environment and aesthetics of the landscape. They were the main traditional practice for the utilization of the water of the streams, with multiple benefits. These low elevations create some steps/stairs in the slope of the riverbed, thus reducing the speed of the water flow, and creating small troughs, which make the water readily available for the crops, but also for tame and wild animals (vaskines). In this way, biodiversity is also enhanced, since microscopic wetlands are formed, ideal for many species of plants, insects, amphibians and crabs as well as for the hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that pass every spring and autumn over Kythera. Apart from the above, perhaps their most important function is the enrichment of the aquifer, since through them more water is stored underground.
