For centuries, the city of Lucerne had a stone sill in the bed of the Reuss river raised to direct more water to the city mills near the Spreuerbrücke bridge and to raise the water level of Lake Lucerne. In 1852 the fixed sill was replaced by a needle weir (Reuss weir).
This technical device made it possible to regulate the water level using needles made of Douglas fir wood. At low water level, the Reuss weir is equipped with all needles, at high water level, the needles are gradually removed. The Reuss weir is a fascinating technical-historical object.
