Der Bleilochstausee bildet mit einer Länge von 28 km und einem Wasservolumen von 215 Mio. m³ den größten Stausee in ganz Deutschland.

Ausschlaggebend für den Talsperrenbau waren damals der Schutz vor Hochwasserkatastrophen und natürlich auch energiewirtschaftliche Interessen.

Da die Staumauer zwischen den Bleibergen liegt, bekam die Talsperre ihren Namen. Die Staumauer wurde in den Jahren von 1926-1932 erbaut.  Der Bau der Bleilochtalsperre erfolgte innerhalb der Notstandsarbeiten des Landes Thüringen. Hierzu wurden Arbeitslose aus allen Teilen Thüringens und Sachsens für jeweils 6 Monate am Bau der Sperre beschäftigt. 1926 wurden bei 10 bis 12-stündiger Arbeitszeit die Stundenlöhne von 70 auf 64 Pfennig gesenkt. Die Beschäftigten leisteten Widerstand, indem sie in ihre Heimatorte zurückkehrten. Ihr Protest blieb jedoch erfolglos, denn andere Arbeitslose führten die Arbeiten zum neuen Tarif weiter. 1927 erfolgte der erste organisierte Massenstreik auf der Baustelle, indem 600 Arbeiter acht Tage lang um ihr Recht kämpften und eine Erhöhung des Stundenlohnes um 7 Pfennige erzwangen. Durchschnittlich wurden beim Bau der Bleilochtalsperre rund 1000 Notstandsarbeiter beschäftigt, wobei die größte Belegschaftsstärke 1930/31 fast 1500 Mann betrug, für das Gießen der Mauer in 3 Schichten von April bis November. Durch den Stau wurden 120 Gebäude und 20 Industrieanlagen unter Wasser gesetzt. 700 Einwohner mussten umgesiedelt werden. Die durchschnittliche Dichte im Staugebiet betrug vor der Überflutung 76,1 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer.

Zwei Maschinensätze mit je 2 Francis-Turbinen, einen Generator und einer Pumpe haben insgesamt eine Leistung von 80000 KW. Schluckfähigkeit je Turbine 45 m³ pro Sekunde. Zur Hochwasserentlastung dienen eine Hochwasserrinne, in der pro Sekunde 500 m³ Wasser abgeführt werden können, und die zwei Umlaufstollen auf der Höhe der Flusssohle, die 150 m³ pro Sekunde abgeben können. Die Stolleneinläufe werden durch je einen 25 Tonnen schweren Flachschieber verschlossen. Gemeinsam mit den Turbinenrohren können so pro Sekunde 717 m³ Wasser abgeführt werden.

Die Länge der Mauer beträgt 208, die Höhe 65 m und die Breite 47m an der Sohle.

Wie kaum eine andere Mittelgebirgslandschaft veränderte das obere Saaletal durch den Bau der Talsperre seinen ursprünglichen Charakter. Ein ganz neues Landschaftsbild entstand. Saalburg liegt nun direkt am „Thüringer Meer“.
