Cascada se formează prin scurgerea pe un perete abrupt a apelor adunate într-un circ glaciar. Cascada se află la altitudinea de 1300 metri și are o cădere de apă în trepte pe o lungime totală de circa 90 de metri, ceea ce o face cea mai mare cascadă din România.
Numele cascadei își are originea într-o serie de legende care se învârt, aproape invariabil, în jurul dispariției unei herghelii de cai pe acest loc.
Dacă în perioada primăvară-toamnă cascada poate fi admirată în cădere, iarna apele îngheață adesea. Aici vin mulți cățărători pentru antrenamente de cățărare pe gheață.
