Ursprungskirche wurde wahrscheinlich auf einem alten sorbisch-heidnischen Kultplatz als Stadt- und Schlosskirche, vermutlich im 12. oder 13. Jahrhundert, erbaut.
1540 brannten die Kirche sowie ein Großteil der Stadt ab.
Nach dem langwierigen Wiederaufbau wurde erst 1827 der Turm vollendet und 1828 wurde dann die Turmuhr eingebaut.
In den 30-er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts bekam die Kirche das runde Bleiglasfenster mit der Lutherrose im Osten des Altarraumes.
1986 begannen wiederum umfangreiche Reparaturen und Rekonstruktionen, zunächst im Inneren des Kirchenraumes. Nach Auffinden der ursprünglichen Baupläne stellte man den Altarraum in seiner alten Prägung und Farbgebung von 1784 wieder her.
Während der Restaurierung des Kirchengebäudes wurde auch die 1791 durch den Orgelbaumeister Johann Gottlieb Trampeli (Adorf) fertiggestellte Orgel überholt.
