Auf den Überresten früherer Kirchen, lassen sich Erweiterungen ab dem Jahre 750, in der Karolingerzeit, der ottonischen Zeit, der Romanik und Gotik nachweisen.
Der Heilige Veit (oder auch Sankt Vitus genannt), der Patron der kath. Pfarrkirche Schmiechen, ist einer der "Vierzehn Nothelfer", einer Gruppe von 14 Christen aus dem zweiten bis vierten Jahrhundert, die allesamt als Märtyrer starben. Der Legende nach wurde Veit, weil er seinem christlichen Glauben treu bleiben wollte, einer Tortur unterworfen: dem "Aufenthalt" in siedendem Öl. Heilig wie der Jüngling Vitus nun aber einmal war, machte ihm dieses spätrömische Verfahren (der Legende nach) nichts aus.
