1263 erste urkundliche Erwähnung Pausas („plebanus in pussen“ - Pfarrer in Pausa). Demnach hatte der Ort bereits vor seiner Ersterwähnung eine Kirche.
1526 Reformation in Pausa
Infolge verheerender Stadtbrände wurde die Kirche mehrmals zerstört und dann 1825 im heutigen Baustil geweiht.
Kirchenschiff mit Steinmüller-Orgel, Kanzel und Altar. Das Altarrelief "Die Grablegung Jesu" ist aus Carrara-Marmor und eine Kopie der Pietá des Italieners Dupré aus dem Dom von Siena.
Die im ersten Weltkrieg eingebauten Eisengussglocken hatten ausgedient. Am 16.11.2014 wurden dann 4 neue Glocken feierlich auf dem Kirchplatz geweiht und am darauffolgenden Tag unter den Augen vieler Zuschauer hinauf in den Kirchturm gezogen und an Ort und Stelle eingesetzt.
Die vier alten Glocken haben ihren letzten Standort neben der Friedhofskapelle gefunden (siehe auch Stadtrundgang Punkt 6).
Die St.-Michaeliskirche ist Bestandteil des Stadtrundganges Pausa und unter Punkt 4 zu finden.
