Die Kirche wurde ursprünglich im romanischen Stil erbaut mit in den Außenwänden eingemauerten vorkeltischen, keltischen und römischen Reliefsteinen mit Personendarstellungen und Skulpturen. Die hier ebenfalls eingemauerte, kopflose überlebensgroße Statue, die "Riesin von St. Donat", ist eine Männerfigur von einem römerzeitlichen Grabmal.
