The early Gothic parish church of St. Christoph at Karmeliterplatz was built between 1292 and 1325. It was almost completely destroyed in the heavy bombing raids on Mainz in 1942 and 1945. In 1963/64, the ruins were redesigned as a memorial and chapel.
St. Christoph houses a late Gothic baptismal font, in which Johannes Gutenberg is said to have been baptized according to tradition. The modern relief located between the concrete supports is by the sculptor Heinz Hemrich.
In 2010, the Mainz patron Stefan Schmitz took over the now severely damaged ruins of St. Christoph. In 2012, the "Initiative St. Christoph" was founded, with the aim of restoring the dignity of the site with the help of public and private funds. Together with the city of Mainz, a restoration plan was created that aimed to complete the memorial in time for the 70th anniversary of its destruction on February 27, 2015.
The plan was successfully implemented: The ruins, the tower, and the outdoor facilities were extensively renovated. Since 2015, an exhibition inside the church has made the memorial a cross-generational place of remembrance. Modern, brightly colored glass panels illustrate the history of St. Christoph and inform about the period of National Socialism and World War II in Mainz. Historical photographs document the extensive destruction of the city until the end of the war.
