Die Baugestaltung der heutigen Kirche stammt aus der Zeit nach dem Brand im Jahre 1703. Bei der Feuerkatastrophe des Jahres 1846 wurde die barocke Einrichtung der Kirche zerstört.
Im Zuge der letzten großen Kirchenrenovierung in den Jahren von 1964 bis 1967 entfernte man die neuklassizistische Ausstattung des 19. Jahrhunderts. Der nüchterne Kirchenraum wird heute von wenigen, dafür aber umso wertvolleren Kunstwerken geschmückt.
