The St. George Church does not follow a uniform architectural style due to its eventful history. As a result of the Reformation, the church became a simultaneous church in 1707. The western nave was given to the Reformed (today's Protestant Church), while the eastern part (Catholic Church) has hardly been used for church purposes since the new construction of the Edith Stein Church (Friedelsheimer Strasse).
The town church of St. George does not exhibit a uniform architectural style and, due to the tumultuous fate of the town, has undergone many changes and destructions. Originally built as a single-nave church, it received a late Gothic choir in the 14th century. From 1508 to 1574, it served as the monastery church of the destroyed Abbey of Limburg.
After the Reformation, it was assigned to the Protestants, who removed the existing interior furnishings.
Burned down during the Reunion Wars in 1674 and 1689, the church remained in ruins until 1708. It was then shared between the Protestants, who received the nave, and the newly established Catholic parish, which was allocated the choir. The tower became a joint property.
In the years 1711/13, the church was reconstructed into its present form with an raised tower and late Baroque dome. Since 1715, a wall has separated the areas of both confessions. The choir, used as a Catholic church, received an additional small choir on the eastern side in 1721. The main altar and three Baroque side altars are works by local artists from the 18th century. After the construction of the Edith Stein Church, the old building is rarely used. The Protestant nave was rebuilt in 1860/61 and expanded, renovated, and equipped with wooden galleries in 1905/07.
