During the time of the Landgrave, there was a huge drill hall on the upper castle square. From the stones of this hall, the first Catholic church was built. In 1896, it was demolished and replaced by an emergency wooden church, leading to the construction of the Pirminius Church. On March 15, 1945, the predecessor building was destroyed during the large air raid on Pirmasens. In 1958, the reconstruction of the church could begin. The plans came from the later diocesan building consultant Wilhelm Schulte, the son of the architect of the destroyed neo-Gothic church (1900). His aim was not to create something entirely new, but to rebuild the destroyed church in a contemporary style. Inside, St. Pirmin Church houses a frontal relic of Saint Pirmin as well as a forearm relic of Blessed Paul-Josef Nardini, whose burial site is located in the nearby Nardini Chapel.
