Die jetzige Pfarrkirche ist der dritte oder vierte Bau des St. Martin Gotteshauses in Wängle. Die erste Kirche, die hier in der fränkischen Zeit (vielleicht noch im 8. Jahrhundert) erbaut worden war, war wie die anderen Kirchen auf dem Lande wohl ein einfacher Holzbau, dessen Raum für die noch kleine Schar der Gläubigen ausreichte. Wie lange in Wängle eine Holzkirche stand, ist nicht bekannt. Ziemlich sicher geschah es in der späteren romanischen Bauperiode (1250 bis 1300).

Die Leitung des Baues hatte der herrschaftliche Maurermeister Paul Thorwarthl inne. Nach Vollendung des Baues wurde auf das Fest des Kirchenpatrons hin (11. November 1704) der prächtige neue Hochaltar mit dem Bild des Hl. Martin aufgestellt. Die feierliche Einweihung der Kirche, bei der wahrscheinlich auch die zwei Seitenaltäre fertig gestellt waren, fand erst am 24. Juni 1732 durch den Augsburger Weihbischof Dr. Johann Jakob von Mayr statt.
