Mauthen, Pfarrkirche hl. Markus

Die Pfarrkirche hl. Markus in Mauthen, eine im Kern romanische Chorturmkirche (urk. 1466), wurde während des Türkeneinfalls 1478 schwer verwüstet, Anfang des 16. Jhs. wiederaufgebaut und 1742 durch ein barockes Seitenschiff und einen Chorzubau erweitert. Bedeutsam sind die Fresken an der Kirchensüdwand (1514), deutlich von zwei verschiedenen Meistern gefertigt. Die Darstellung eines Schmerzensmannes mit zahlreichen Handwerkszeichen (so genannter Sonntagschristus) sowie der Tod Mariens und ihre Aufnahme in den Himmel lassen erkennen, dass der ausführende Künstler schon von der italienischen Renaissance beeinflusst war. Der Maler der übrigen Fresken (Erzengel Michael, Anna selbdritt, hl. Christophorus und die Szene Beweinung Christi) stand stilistisch jedoch noch der Gotik nahe. Man betritt die Kirche von Osten durch ein gotisches Spitzbogenportal. Innen an der Nordwand des Chores findet sich ein Freskenfragment einer monumentalen Kreuzigung, an der Südwand des Langhauses eine Schutzmantelmadonna (1631). Der mächtige Hochaltar (1744) zeigt als Altarbild eine Darstellung des Kirchenpatrons, im Oberbild Marienkrönung. Die beiden barocken Seitenaltäre sind in Aufbau und Dekor gleich, links mit einem Altarbild Mariae Verkündigung und rechts Enthauptung Johannes d. Täufers. Im rechten Seitenschiff steht der um 1729/39 erbaute Franz- Xaver-Altar. Seit dem Jahr 1744 wird zu Ehren des Heiligen eine neuntägige Andacht in der Pfarrkirche abgehalten (25. Nov. bis 3. Dez.).
