Fast bescheiden verbirgt sich der Kirchenbau hinter mächtigen Bäumen. Die Martinskirche gilt als einer der ältesten kirchlichen Bauten Österreichs.
Ihre Geschichte ist seit mehr als 1200 Jahren mit jener der Stadt Linz verwurzelt. Die ehemalige mittelalterliche Befestigungsmauer führte von der Linzer Burg über die Promenade, den Graben und den Pfarrplatz zurück zur Burg. Die Martinskirche befand sich zunächst außerhalb dieser Befestigungsanlage, zählte jedoch aufgrund ihrer räumlichen Nähe zum Schutzbereich der Burg. Die erste Nennung der Martinskirche als „capella“ geht auf das Jahr 799 zurück. Im Inneren erwarten Sie freigelegte römische Inschriftensteine und eine römische Ofenanlage. Berühmt ist auch die Kopie des „Volto Santo“-Bildes, dessen Ursprung in Lucca (Italien) liegt.
