Kostel sv. Kříže

The Church of the Holy Cross in Nebovidy is a rural church with exceptionally rare Gothic wall paintings. For centuries, no one knew about them — they remained hidden beneath layers of limewash, likely covered shortly after they were created in the 14th century. The secret was discovered in 1991 by a local native, Josef Bartl, during electrical repairs. Subsequent restoration work (1992–1996) revealed an extensive set of paintings in the nave and later in the chancel, totaling about 200 m² today. Among other motifs, you can see scenes from Christ’s life, the legend of St. Catherine of Alexandria, and depictions of the Virgin Mary. The first written mention of the church dates to 1329; the building underwent Gothic modifications and later Baroque alterations. Since 1996, it has been protected as a cultural monument.
