Die Kirche wurde 1727-31 von Franziskanermönchen erbaut. Nach der Auflösung des Klosters im Jahre 1812 wurde das Inventar an verschiedene Kirchen verteilt, u.a. erhielt die Löninger Kirche die Barockorgel der Klosterkirche. Seit 1818 wird sie als staatliche Simultankirche von beiden Konfessionen und als Anstaltskirche der JVA für Frauen genutzt.

Zum früheren Kloster gehörte ein Totenkeller, in dem etwa 150 Mönche bestattet wurden und der zum Teil noch heute erhalten ist. Dieser kann zu bestimmten Terminen im Rahmen einer Führung durch die Klosterkirche besichtigt werden.
