Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew
The imperial cathedral of St Bartholomew is the largest religious building in Frankfurt. It is located in the centre of the old town.
The current building is the fourth church on the site. It was largely built between 1250 and 1514. However, due to a tight budget, the west tower was closed for several hundred years with a makeshift dome. It was only after a major fire at the end of the 19th century that the original plans were fully realised.
The church owes its fame more to its political than its sacred significance: from 1562 to 1792, ten Roman-German emperors were elected and crowned. In the 19th century in particular, the cathedral was seen as a symbol of national unity.
