Between 1507 and 1515, the mountain and pilgrimage church "Sankt Oswald", also known as the "Dudelskirche", was built in the Oswaldtal valley. There is no clear answer as to why it later fell into disrepair, as many documents were lost with the destruction of the Grünhain monastery. There are many legends surrounding the ruins of the "Dudelskirche". The best known is that the two hammer lords Klinger had to build a church as atonement for the murder of the town judge Götterer from Elterlein. However, the church was struck by lightning and destroyed during the inauguration ceremony. The origin of the popular meaning "Dudelskirche" is just as uncertain as its construction. Some interpret the name as a cursed church, others believe that the meaning was derived from the word "Dult", which stood for fair. This derivation is very likely, as at that time it was permitted to hold markets at pilgrimage churches.
