Citizen Hospital
The Deidesheim Citizen Hospital at Weinstraße 35 - 39 consisted of an inn for passing travelers and a charitable hospital for elderly men and women, which was founded in 1494 by Knight Nikolaus Übelhirn von Böhl. He also had the late Gothic chapel built. Today, the buildings house the Hotel and Café Ritter von Böhl.
Since the high Middle Ages, Deidesheim likely had a leper or poorhouse that was, following the customs of the time, located outside the town. In 1494, the knight Nikolaus von Böhl, known as Übelhirn, who had no descendants, endowed a well-equipped hospital and house for the sick and needy men and women from Deidesheim and the surrounding area, as well as for passing travelers and pilgrims, on his property within the town. The beneficiaries were initially proposed jointly by the heirs of the founder and the Deidesheim city council to the prince-bishop. In addition to the right to reside in the hospital, they received a modest meal along with a cup of wine and were required to attend the service in the chapel on prescribed days, conducted by a chaplain assigned here, in order to avoid idleness in old age and to serve God. In addition, the hospital also provided food for passing pilgrims, beggars, soldiers with their families, and cared for the sick, who were often simply dropped off at the door, as well as orphaned children.
Today, the building is used as a café (Café Alt Deidesheim), guesthouse (Gästehaus Ritter von Böhl), and as a short-term residence for seniors.
