Die Alexanderkirche aus der spätromanischen und frühgotischen Zeit  des 13. Jh. ist die einzige Basilika im Oldenburger Land.  Ihre Vorgänger gehen auf eine Holzkirche zurück, in der die Reliquien des HL. Alexander im Jahr 851 abgelegt wurden, die der Enkel Widukinds, Graf Waltbert, von Rom nach Wildeshausen holte.

Sehenswert sind im Inneren das Triumphkreuz aus dem 14. Jh., das Sakramentshäuschen, der Reliquienschrein und Reste des Levitengestühls. Einzigartig auch das große Fenster im Jugendstil sowie die bei der letzten Restaurierung frei gelegten Jugendstilmalereien im Chorraum.

Die neue Orgel verspricht nicht nur durch die Freilegung der Fensterrosette im Turm neue Lichtverhältnisse sondern auch herrliche Klangerlebnisse in weithin bekannten Kirchenkonzerten.
