Abteikirche, Offenbach-Hundheim
(Reclam's Art Guide III, p. 521)
Significant building at the transition from the late Romantic to the early Gothic period
Benedictine monks built their provost church of St. Maria, which is now called the "Abbey Church", starting in 1215. Probably a flourishing pilgrimage made its construction possible around 1230. As it belonged to the Grumbach office, it remained Catholic after the Reformation introduced at the monastery in 1538, until the Wild and Rhine Counts of Grumbach also followed Luther's teachings in 1555. The three-nave pillar basilica with its raised octagonal crossing tower as well as a main and two side choirs, is considered one of the most important architectural monuments from the time of the transition from the Rhenish late Romanesque to the early Gothic. The building was not completed until the beginning of the 14th century. The last German Emperor, Wilhelm II, had the torso consisting of transept, choir and abbots saved from decay by a generous renovation.
For this building we offer a guided tour by specially trained church guides to all those interested. In the abbey church, in addition to nationally important church services, many concerts also take place. The smaller branch parishes of Wiesweiler and Niedereisenbach also have two beautiful churches that invite you to linger.
