Sie wurde 1916 von den Salzburger Freiwilligen Schützen unter GM von Krasel an der Stelle des 1915 hergestellten Holzkirchleins zur Erinnerung an die 42 Lawinentoten vom 12.3. 1915 errichtet und von Fürstbischof Adam Hefter als Marienkapelle geweiht. Seit 1926 im Besitz des Alpenvereins, wurde sie mehrmals renoviert, 1948 neu eingedeckt und verschindelt.

1979 wurde 200 Jahre nach der Entdeckung der Wulfenia durch Wulfen dessen Schädel hier feierlich bestattet.

1996 Neueindeckung mit Lärchenschindeln und die Anbringung kunstvoller Glasfenster. Dezember 2009 - Verglasung des Vorbaus. Seit 1948 ist die Kirche Schauplatz des Nassfeldkirchtages mit völkerverbindender Tradition immer am 1. Augustsonntag als Fest der Freundschaft. 1948 – offene Grenze, 3000 Besucher! So wurde die Kirche zum Kristallisationspunkt einer Entwicklung, die ein geeintes Europa vorwegnahm.

Es möge jedem Besucher bewusst sein, welch Geschenk der Frieden ist und man sollte jener gedenken, die als Opfer von Kriegen und Gewalt allzu früh ihr Leben lassen oder schwere Verwundungen und seelisches Leid ertragen mussten und müssen.
