The votive chapel in the castle park near Berg

The votive chapel was once built in honour of King Ludwig II. It is located above the spot where his body was once found. Ludwig‘s mother Marie donated a funeral lamp in 1887, which was later integrated into the staircase. On the 10th anniversary of the king‘s death, Prince Regent Luitpold laid the foundation stone of the chapel in June 1896, and four years later the church, built in early Romanesque style, was consecrated. The plans came from the king‘s former architect, Hofoberbaurat Julius Hofmann. By the way: Even today, “loyal to the king” meet every year on the anniversary of Ludwig II death on June 13 for a memorial service in the votive chapel.
