1664 wurde Thomas Pichler, einem Bauernsohn aus Embach, die Erlaubnis erteilt, sich als Einsiedler oberhalb des Schlosses Lichtenberg niederlassen zu dürfen. Er baute jene Höhle, in der das Bildnis des hl. Georg verehrt wurde, zu einer Kapelle aus.
1677 wurde die Messlizenz gewährt.
Unterhalb der Höhle wurde die Einsiedelei an den Felsen gebaut. Zu seiner persönlichen Erbauung ist darin auch eine kleine Kapelle eingerichtet. Die Klausner besorgten insbesondere während der Nacht den Feuerwachdienst. Sobald sie einen Brand bemerkten, läuteten sie mit der Glocke. Als Entschädigung durften sie mit obrigkeitlicher Genehmigung in den Gemeinden Saalfelden, Maria Alm, Leogang, Weißbach, St. Martin und Lofer Spenden sammeln.
Obwohl das Eremitentum zu Beginn des 19. Jhs. verboten wurde, riss die Tradition - im Unterschied zu den meisten übrigen Einsiedeleien - in Saalfelden nicht ab. So finden sich auch heute noch nach dem Abgang eines Einsiedlers immer wieder genügend Bewerber. Sie werden vom Bürgermeister angelobt und vom Saalfeldner Pfarrer installiert. Weder von Gemeinde noch Kirche erhalten sie ein Gehalt. Der Einsiedler muss in der Lage sein seinen Lebensunterhalt selbst zu bestreiten.
