Located in the cathedral square of Bergamo Alta, the Colleoni Chapel is a Renaissance mausoleum commissioned by the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni.
The Colleoni Chapel was built between 1472 and 1476 in place of the old sacristy (although some details were completed in the 16th century). It was commissioned by the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, one of Italy's most famous captains of fortune, as a symbol of his power and devotion to Bergamo. In fact, the chapel houses Colleoni's funeral monument, made of two richly carved sarcophagi: the upper one celebrates biblical scenes such as the Annunciation and the Adoration of the Magi, while the lower, more dramatic one depicts the Crucifixion and the Deposition. Above the sarcophagus stands a gilded equestrian statue celebrating Colleoni at the height of his power. Also inside the chapel is the sarcophagus of Colleoni's daughter Medea, who died at a young age, decorated with heraldic symbols and a Pieta.
The Colleoni Chapel features a central plan, two octagonal domes, and a polychrome marble facade decorated with pink and white lozenges, a Gothic rose window, and statues of Caesar and Trajan.
