Laval Cemetery is a historical site of importance to the Pragelatese community, because the victims of the April 19, 1904 Beth avalanche were buried here.
Laval's small cemetery, called "of the miners," is located next to the parish church of St. James (erected in 1698), whose patron saint's day is celebrated on July 25. Buried in this cemetery are 74 bodies of the 81 victims of a terrible avalanche that, on April 19, 1904, swept away workers descending downstream from the Beth mines. Today they are remembered by a stele inside the cemetery. Also above the entrance is an inscription in French, which translated reads, "Pray for us and think of you. The pleasure of dying without pain is well worth the pain of living without pleasure." It was written by a Catholic pastor after the avalanche tragedy.
The industrial history of the Beth chalcopyrite mines began in 1863 with the concession purchased by Pietro Giani, a well-known entrepreneur from Turin. It was a troubled history economically, but also an opportunity for experimentation with new mining techniques that ended tragically with the 1904 avalanche.
