The vapor cave is located on the site of a former quarry. Alongside the moor and the brine, the CO₂ spring gas is Bad Pyrmont's third valuable natural remedy.
Red sandstone was quarried on the site in the 17th century and quarry workers noticed a "haze" at a certain depth, which caused people to faint. From time to time, dead birds and animals were also found in the pit. When the famous well doctor Dr. Johann Philipp Seip came to Pyrmont in 1712, he got to the bottom of the phenomena. He suspected that it was sulphur fumes. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) was only discovered a few years later as an atmospheric acid.
The strange behavior of the CO₂ source gas has continued to impress visitors from Seip to the present day. The gas is one and a half times heavier than air, so it remains in the pit and rises in the vapor cave to a maximum height of the railing of the visitor corridor. It reacts mainly to the air temperature and air pressure.
Alongside the moor and the brine, CO₂ spring gas is Bad Pyrmont's third valuable natural remedy. The CO₂ spring gas baths are used as part of the range of therapies offered by the Pyrmont State Spa in the KÖNIGIN-LUISE-BAD health center for the treatment of various illnesses. The CO₂ spring gas creates a feeling of warmth, which is due to its circulation-promoting effect.
