Alb-Donau-Kreis Tourismus
Seit 2011 ist die Höhle - als Erste auf der Schwäbischen Alb - mit einer neuen LED-Beleuchtung ausgestattet, die den reichen Tropfsteinschmuck eindrucksvoll zur Geltung bringt.
Der Besucherweg ist 192 m lang und führt bis in 34 m Tiefe.
Die ehemalige Flusshöhle, wird auf ca. 12 bis 15 Millionen Jahre geschätzt. Die Höhle ist nur ein Teil des einst riesigen Höhlensystems. Im Rahmen des jährlich stattfindenden Höhlenfestes, am Pfingstsonntag, zeigt die Hintere Kohlhaldenhöhle den Besuchern ihre Schätze. Sie wurde erst 1987 entdeckt und liegt ca. 100 m von der Sontheimer Höhle entfernt. Die Tropfsteine verdanken ihren einmaligen Zustand diesem einzigen Besuchstag im Jahr.
Die Sontheimer Höhle ist zudem das bedeutendste Fledermausquartier der Schwäbischen Alb. Sie dient als Winterquartier für mehr als 400 Fledermäuse. Um die Tiere zu schützen ist die Höhle vom 1. November bis 30. April geschlossen.
Das Höhlenrasthaus lädt zur Einkehr ein. Eine Grillstelle und ein Spielplatz befinden sich bei der Höhle.
