Ponikva Cave, which also serves as a tunnel on part of the local road from Vareš to Krivaja valley, is home to several species of bat.
This cave/tunnel is one of the few habitats of Barbastella barbastellus, a rare bat species in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bones have been found belonging to the species Eptesicus serotinus Schreber, 1774 and Myotis myotis Borkhausen, 1797 / Myotis blythii Tomes, 1857. A few years ago (March 2007) a dead bat of Rhinolophus sp. was found, no doubt run over by one of the heavy lorries that are so large they have almost no clearance as they drive through the tunnel/cave.
