Die Marienglashöhle bei Friedrichroda ist eine eindrucksvolle Hinterlassenschaft des Bergbaus in Thüringen. 1775 begann man mit dem Bau des Eingangsstollens in der Hoffnung, dort Kupfer zu finden. 1778 fand man statt des erhofften Kupferschiefers eine ausgedehnte Gips-Lagerstätte; die Vorkommen wurden bis 1903 im Untertagebau ausgebeutet. 1784 wurde im Bergwerk eine Gipskristallgrotte, der einzige natürliche Hohlraum des Bergwerks, entdeckt. Sie gilt heute als eine der schönsten und größten Gipskristallgrotten in ganz Europa. Auf einem Durchmesser von knapp zehn Metern formten Jahrmillionen geologischer Entstehungsprozesse farblose, durchsichtige Gipskristalle von bis zu 90 cm Länge. Die Gipskristalle wurden zum Schmuck von Marienbildern verwendet. In dieser Zeit wurde der heutige Name Marienglas gebräuchlich. 1848 wurde der Abbau der Kristalle verboten, so blieb ein einzigartiges Naturdenkmal erhalten. Bei Führungen durch den 110 Meter langen Eingangsstollen eröffnen geologische Fenster rechts und links in den Wänden einen Blick auf die verschiedenen Gesteinsschichten. Im Stollen zu bestaunen sind auch Werkzeuge und Förderkörbe, mit denen der Gipskristall damals abgebaut und gefördert wurde. Attraktion jeden Besuchs ist die einmalige Kristallgrotte. Ein rund 70 Meter langer Steg überbrückt den Höhlensee mit reizvollen Wasserspiegelungen und führt in den westlichen Teil der Schauhöhle. Nach Ende der eindrucksvollen Tour kann man im Mineralienshop Mitbringsel für die Lieben zu Hause erwerben. Ein Schmankerl für Musikliebhaber sind die Konzerte »Unter Tage« in den Wintermonaten. Zu diesen speziellen Events mit einer einmaligen Akustik wird die Höhle mit mehreren Hundert Kerzen ausgeleuchtet.
