Im Bereich einer Flussschleife steht das imposante Felswerk mit zwei kleinen Hohlräumen, die ca. 4-5 m breit, 2-4 m hoch und bis zu 10 m lang sind.
Vom Wanderparkplatz Salzbühl bei Bernstadt führt ein landschaftlich reizvoller Weg entlang der Lone zur Höhle. Wie alle Felsen der Alb, stammt auch das Fohlenhaus aus der Jurazeit, als die Schwäbische Alb von einem tropischen Meer bedeckt war und sich aus Kalkalgen, Schwämmen und Korallen große Riffe bildeten.
Hier entdeckte Funde stammen aus der späten Altsteinzeit, frühen Mittelsteinzeit, Jungsteinzeit, vorrömischen Eisenzeit und römischen Zeit.
Das Fohlenhaus ist frei zugänglich.
Gegenüber der Höhle befindet sich eine Grillstelle mit überdachtem Rastplatz, Tischen und Bänken.
