Das Finstere Loch ist eine Durchgangshöhle. Sie ist mit einer Gesamtlänge von 140 m die längste der mehr als 30 Höhlen am Rosenstein.
Das Finstere Loch verfügt, neben den beiden natürlich entstandenen Mundlöchern im Süden und Nordosten, über einen weiteren seitlichen Zugang, das sogenannte Fenster. Die Höhle weitet sich kurz hinter dem südlichen Eingang in eine bis zu 17 m breite und 5 m hohe Halle. Über einen Versturz führt der Höhlengang weiter, wird schmaler und niedriger, steigt an und mündet nach etwa 50 m in einer weiteren, nun 36 m langen und bis zu 6,5 m breiten Halle, die an ihrere höchsten Stelle über 13 m misst. Über ein Gefälle führt ein 25 m langer Gang zum nordöstlichen Ausgang der Höhle. Zum Schutz der Fledermäuse ist die Halle nur in den Sommermonaten begehbar.
